Reach PLC, the UK’s largest publisher, has just announced its plans to transform its newsrooms by integrating artificial intelligence, or AI.
Guten – Their AI-Powered Content Creation
At the heart of Reach’s new AI strategy is Guten, an in-house tool developed in collaboration with Amazon Web Services. Guten has been created to assist journalists by generating draft articles from wire content, which are then reviewed and refined by human editors. This process makes the process and publication of breaking news much quicker, reducing the time from minutes to just seconds.
Content Repurposing Across Platforms
This new tool means that articles can be adapted for different brands within Reach’s portfolio. A single story can be reworked to suit the tone and audience of their publications like the Daily Mirror, Express, or Liverpool Echo etc.
Future Outlook of Journalism
This new AI change will certainly unsettle some journalists, even those with a journalism degree, like from https://schoolofjournalism.co.uk/, as they wonder how new tools like Guten will affect their daily work and job security.
However, Reach maintains that AI is intended to complement human journalists, not replace them. The company has stated that they will continue to invest in their workforce, and will be providing extra training and support to adapt to the changes.
Ethical Use of AI
Despite the integration of AI, Reach has emphasised that it has implemented safeguards to prevent the publication of misleading or incorrect information. Journalists will be trained to review AI-generated content carefully, particularly to verify quotations and make sure the facts are accurate.
