Why Gen Z freshers are turning to macrame

There’s been plenty in the press about how this current generation of freshers is markedly different from their predecessors. Whereas students in previous years tended to spend their fresher period going to parties, hitting up the bar and generally having a riotous time with their new student friends and housemates, today’s freshers seem to be an altogether calmer bunch!

Kebabs are out. Crafts are in.

In fact, student unions have been so struck with the trend that they have begun to completely transform what a fresher’s week actually looks like.

Instead of cheap beer and greasy kebabs, universities are putting on sober spa evenings, houmous and vegan food societies and even macramé crafts nights, reflecting this generation’s interest in health, wellbeing and craft. Bristol University has put on a whopping 101 sober events for freshers, including drum and bass boxing, yoga and meditation, as well as various craft sessions.

What today’s students know

It’s an interesting trend that might shock Gen X and Millennial parents, but today’s students have a very different outlook on life and a far greater awareness of good mental health and the risks of hard living and excess partying. Many of them simply appear to be calmer and more inclined to pursue a quieter life.

A lot of Gen Z people also know that crafting, such as macrame, isn’t just easy to begin, but also incredibly beneficial to health in many ways.

Try macrame yourself

Macrame is great because it’s low-skill, a lot of fun, very sociable and a great way to make beautiful items for your home and wardrobe. You can even buy a macrame kit from specialist retailers such as https://www.woolcouturecompany.com/collections/macrame-kits that offer macrame kits to suit all interests and abilities. These give you everything you need to make a fantastic project, with everything included.

Start with a wall hanging for your home and you’ll have something truly customised and beautiful that can provide you with joy, make your house look trendy and give you something productive to do with your time! Maybe Gen Z freshers are onto something?
