How to knit with plastic yarns

Although many of us have cotton totes and bags for life we use for shopping, many people still have a stash of old plastic bags they don’t know what to do with. Fortunately, sustainable crafters have come up with a solution – plastic bags can be turned into plarn, or plastic yarn, to create wonderful bespoke items.

Reuse and recycle

Whether you have never heard of plarn or are an experienced crafter, anyone can have a go at a simple project to turn unwanted plastic into something beautiful and practical. The Guardian suggests making a funky clutch bag out of unwanted plastic shopping bags. The great thing about items such as this is that they are reusable and make us less reliant on disposable carriers. Plarn is practical because it is strong and durable, which means it will last.

Get artistic

It is not just practical items that can be made; in addition, you can use plarn in the same way you would use standard wool or yarn to knit or macrame just about anything.

If you are struggling for ideas, consider using a macrame kit. You will find a wide range available from stockists such as Wool Couture.

You could make an indoor mat or rug, or a basket for storing your knitting needles and bits of material or newspapers. How about that 70s classic, the macrame plant holder? You may want to make something to wear, such as a belt for jeans or a piece of jewellery. There have even been small pet beds made from plarn.

Whatever you decide to have a go at making, you will get pleasure not only from being creative but also from doing your bit to help the planet. What’s not to like?
