Getting your Garden Furniture Ready for Winter and Storage

Right now, the sun is out, and we can sit out in the garden and make the most of the beautiful weather. Taking care of garden furniture so that we can enjoy it and get the most out of it during these months is essential. Something that we need to do when summer comes to an end is to prepare our garden furniture for the winter months, to make sure that it is going to last and be ready for the next year.

Before you pack anything away, a good scrub is the first thing that you can do. The outdoors has many things which can make a mess on your furniture, from bird droppings to bits of foliage. It is a good idea to do this on a sunny day, as then it gives the furniture a chance to dry out, and you will then not have to deal with any damp or mould on your furniture. It also means that any dirt on there won’t be dried hard over the winter months when it is being stored away.

The material that your furniture is made from may also determine how you best care for it over the winter – for example rattan furniture is lovely, but very prone to weathering, so it is always best to bring it somewhere indoors that is dry over the winter. Plastic furniture is a lot sturdier, but it is best to keep it covered to prevent the plastic from breaking down. Metal and wooden furniture can be repainted and treated to get it to last longer but should be stored inside over the winter to protect it.

There are lots of ways that you can store garden furniture away for the winter – having a special area for this, whether it is something large like these oak framed garages where you can also store all of your garden equipment such as lawn mowers and tools, or a garden shed. It all depends how much space you have in your garden as to what sort of structure you can put in – if you are really strapped for space, a marquee and some covers will provide your furniture with some protection over the winter.
